Head Start Program

East Orange Child Development Corporation’s Head Start program offers a free preschool program for children ages 3-5 at centers throughout the city of East Orange. Our federally funded Head Start program delivers services to children and families in core areas of early learning, health, and family well-being while engaging parents as partners along the way. Our philosophy is that children learn best when their parents are involved in their learning.

Our varied school day includes a mix of individual activities and group instruction, allowing children to explore and learn. Children will learn how to express themselves through art, play, music, and games while exploring the world around them. Our students begin developing their minds and bodies, learning problem-solving skills, and honing their fine motor skills.

Our program includes:

  • Full-day preschool programs with developmentally appropriate curriculum
  • Inclusive educational services and early intervention for children with disabilities
  • A nutritional breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack five days per week
  • Guidance to parents from health professionals regarding the health needs of their child
  • Developmental screenings and assessments
  • Parental support, education, and participation
  • Family advocacy

Head Start and early childhood education do more than prepare children for kindergarten and primary school. It also helps with the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs to build a solid foundation for lifelong learning and well-being. Studies show that Head Start children are more likely to graduate high school, attend college, and receive a post-secondary degree, license, or certification.

Our Head Start Program hours are from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm, with additional Before Care starting at 7:30 am and After Care ending at 6:00 pm.

Our Health Program includes:

  • Speech/Language screenings and referrals
  • Vision screenings and referrals
  • Dental examination
  • Hearing test
  • Mental health observations
  • Lead Poisoning test, HCT/HCB, and Sickle Cell Testing
